Transmission overheating warning and fluid leak in BMW 2 Series – related?

Last week, my BMW showed a transmission overheating warning, and now I’ve spotted fluid dripping under the car. Could the overheating have caused o r worsened the leak? What parts are most likely to fail under such conditions?
