What are the signs of a faulty purge valve in my BMW 2 Series?

Recently, I’ve noticed a rough idle and occasional fuel smell in my BMW 2 Series. Could these be signs of a malfunctioning purge control valve, and how can I confirm the diagnosis?

Symptoms of a failing purge control valve include:

Rough idling, especially just after starting.

Strong petrol smell, often noticeable near the hood o r fuel tank area.

Reduced fuel economy, due to vapor leaks o r poor combustion.

Engine hesitation o r misfires, if excess fuel vapor is drawn into the engine.

Check engine light with codes like P0441, P0446, etc.

A mechanic can test the valve using a vacuum pump o r multimeter to check if it’s stuck open o r closed.
