Why does my BMW 2 Series hesitate and sputter when slowing down o r coming to a stop?

I own a 2017 BMW 218i Gran Coupe in Lahore. Lately, I’ve been experiencing engine sputtering and hesitation when I’m slowing down o r coming to a complete stop. The RPM dips and the car sometimes jerks lightly. A mechanic told me it could be related to the transmission not downshifting properly. Could this be an early sign of transmission failure o r valve body issues? Is this common in Pakistan’s urban traffic and hot weather?
