Why does my BMW 2 Series steering feel unusually stiff, especially when starting the car in the morning?

I’ve noticed that the steering in my BMW 220i feels stiff for the first few minutes after starting the car, especially in colder weather. What could be causing this stiffness, and should I be concerned?

Stiff steering right after a cold start could be due to:

Cold weather thickening the power steering fluid if hydraulic-based.
