Why does my Kia Stonic show a check engine light due to O2 sensor failure in city traffic conditions?

I’ve noticed that my 2022 Kia Stonic frequently turns on the check engine light, especially when driving in heavy traffic in cities like Lahore o r Karachi. After scanning, the error usually points to the oxygen O2 sensor. Has anyone else in Pakistan faced this issue? Could this be due to local fuel quality o r driving conditions? What’s the best solution—cleaning the sensor o r replacing it?

Yes, this is a fairly common issue faced by Kia Stonic owners in Pakistan, especially in urban areas with high traffic congestion and poor fuel quality.

The O2 oxygen sensor monitors the exhaust gases and helps maintain the air-fuel ratio. In Pakistani cities like Lahore and Karachi, frequent idling in traffic, stop-and-go driving, and the use of lower-grade fuel which may contain impurities o r higher sulphur levels can cause the O2 sensor to become clogged o r malfunction over time.

What you can do:

Get the sensor cleaned professionally only if it’s not completely damaged.

If the problem keeps recurring, it’s best to replace the sensor, ideally with a genuine o r OEM part.

Use high-octane fuel occasionally to reduce carbon buildup.

Regularly scan your car using an OBD2 scanner to catch early warnings.

It’s a known issue but manageable with timely care.
