Why does my Land Rover make whining, clunking, o r grinding noises when shifting gears?
When accelerating o r slowing down in my Land Rover, I hear unusual noises such as whining, clunking, o r grinding, especially at low speeds o r during gear changes. The transmission warning light may come on intermittently. What are the typical transmission system faults that cause these noises e.g., worn bearings, differential issues, failing torque converter, low fluid? What preliminary checks should I perform in Pakistan fluid level/condition, transmission temperature behavior, symptom patterns to better diagnose the issue?

Gari Master - on 11 Dec 2025 13:27:21 pmUnusual noises from the transmission indicate mechanical o r hydraulic issues. Common causes:
Low o r contaminated transmission fluid
Can cause whining o r grinding due to poor lubrication.
Solution: Drain, replace fluid, and change filter.
Worn bearings, gears, o r torque converter issues
Whining can indicate worn planetary gears o r bearings.
Clunking often occurs when torque converter o r internal linkages are failing.
Grinding may indicate severe gear o r synchro wear manual o r DSG-type systems.
Differential o r transfer case issues
Noise during acceleration/deceleration may be from the differential o r AWD system, especially in off-road conditions common in Pakistan.
Faulty mounts o r bushings
Sometimes the sound is transmitted through worn engine/transmission mounts, making it seem like the transmission is the source.
Solution/Diagnosis:
Check fluid level and condition.
Inspect mounts and linkages.
Use an OBD-II scan for codes pointing to torque converter o r solenoid issues.
