Why is my BMW 2 Series overheating frequently in Lahore traffic despite coolant being full?

I own a 2017 BMW 218i in Lahore, and lately, the car’s temperature gauge keeps rising, especially in heavy traffic o r when idling with the A/C on. The coolant level is fine, and there are no visible leaks. A mechanic mentioned the water pump might not be circulating coolant properly, but I’m unsure if this is common in hot climates like Pakistan’s. Could a faulty electric water pump be the cause, and what’s the best way to diagnose it before replacing it?

This issue is quite common with the Haval H6, especially in hot cities like Karachi where traffic and high ambient temperatures push the cooling system to its limits. Even though the coolant looks fine, the problem often lies in the electric water pump not circulating coolant efficiently.

Here’s what you can check:

Coolant Flow Test: With the engine running, open the coolant reservoir cap carefully, when it’s cool and check if you can see coolant movement — if it’s stagnant, the pump might not be working properly.

Listen for the Pump: The H6’s pump should make a faint whirring sound when the ignition is turned on before the engine starts. No sound may indicate failure.

Scan for Error Codes: Sometimes, a failing pump triggers hidden fault codes like P261B o r P261C related to the coolant pump performance.

If the pump is weak o r intermittent, replacing it is the best solution. Many Haval owners in Pakistan have had to change their OEM water pumps within 30,000–40,000 km. Always use original GWM coolant and OEM parts — cheaper coolant o r local replacements can cause the new pump to fail early again.
