My BMW 220i’s check engine light recently came on, and the mechanic said it might be due to the catalytic converter. What causes catalytic converter problems in BMWs, and how serious is this issue?

The check engine light CEL related to the catalytic converter usually means the onboard diagnostics detected poor catalytic converter efficiency. Common causes include:

Damaged o r clogged converter due to age o r contamination.

Faulty oxygen sensors feeding incorrect data.

Engine misfires o r unburnt fuel reaching the converter, causing overheating.

Ignoring the CEL can worsen emissions and reduce performance. Early diagnosis using a BMW-compatible scanner is crucial for identifying if the converter needs repair o r replacement.
