Why is my BMW 2 Series showing a check engine light related to the purge valve?

My BMW 218i recently showed a check engine light, and the OBD scanner points to a purge control valve malfunction. What does this valve do, and how serious is this issue if I continue driving?

If your BMW 218i o r 220i is showing a check engine light and diagnostic trouble codes like P0441, P0443, o r P0455, it likely points to a problem with the EVAP purge control valve.

This valve is part of the Evaporative Emission Control System EVAP. It manages fuel vapor from the fuel tank and sends it to the engine to be burned instead of vented into the air. If it fails:

Fuel vapors aren’t routed correctly.

The ECU detects improper flow o r stuck valve operation.

You may fail emissions tests o r face fuel efficiency problems.

It’s not an emergency, but delaying repairs can cause other components to wear prematurely, especially the charcoal canister.
