Why is my Land Rover Defender leaking transmission fluid near the gearbox?
I own a Land Rover Defender in Pakistan, and I recently noticed a red/brown fluid leaking near the gearbox. What are the most common causes of transmission fluid leaks in Defenders, and how can I identify whether it’s a minor seal issue o r something more serious? Are there specific parts that tend to fail in local conditions?

Gari Master - on 11 Dec 2025 16:56:16 pmTransmission fluid leaks near the gearbox are often caused by worn o r damaged seals and gaskets. In Defenders, the most common culprits are:
Output shaft seal: This can wear over time and start leaking, especially in older models.
Input shaft seal: Less common but still possible.
Transmission pan gasket: If the gasket is worn o r improperly installed, fluid can seep out.
Loose bolts o r damaged pan: Road vibrations can loosen bolts, causing leaks.
In Pakistan, heat and rough roads accelerate wear. To identify the source:
Clean the gearbox thoroughly and inspect for fresh leaks.
Check fluid levels low levels can indicate a serious leak.
Look for red/brown fluid pooling under the vehicle.
If the leak is minor, replacing the gasket o r seal usually resolves it. For major leaks o r internal damage, a professional inspection is necessary.
