Can a damaged steering rack cause oil leakage o r play in the steering of a Swift?

There’s a small oil leak under the front of my Suzuki Swift, and the steering feels loose o r has too much play. Could this be a sign of a damaged steering rack o r power steering fluid leak?

Yes, a worn o r leaking steering rack can cause both fluid leaks in hydraulic setups and excessive play o r looseness in the steering wheel. This is more common in older Swifts pre-2010 with hydraulic power steering, but some EPS units can also develop mechanical slack.

Signs of steering rack issues:

Oil puddle under the car, usually near front middle

Loose o r unresponsive steering

Clunking when turning

Uneven tire wear

In EPS models, a mechanical problem in the rack like worn gears o r bushings can cause play, even without fluid leaks. A workshop can inspect the rack and suggest repair, rebuild, o r replacement depending on severity. Reconditioned racks are available in local markets.
