Can a Faulty Thermostat Cause My Hyundai Tucson to Overheat?

Sometimes my Tucson’s temperature gauge goes into the red zone unexpectedly, especially on short trips. A mechanic suggested the thermostat might be stuck closed. How common is thermostat failure in Pakistani conditions, and how does it cause overheating?

Yes, a stuck thermostat is a frequent cause of overheating, especially on short trips where the engine hasn’t reached full operating temperature. The thermostat controls coolant flow between the engine and radiator:

If stuck closed, coolant doesn’t circulate to the radiator, causing the engine to heat rapidly.

In Pakistan’s warm climate, a faulty thermostat can cause temperature spikes even under normal driving.

Symptoms:

Quick rise in engine temperature after startup.

Heater blowing cold air coolant isn’t circulating properly.

Overheating warning light.

What to do:

Replace the thermostat as preventive maintenance every 80,000–100,000 km.

Test thermostat by observing temperature gauge behavior o r having a mechanic perform a cooling system check.
