Can a Faulty Water Pump Cause Noisy Engine Operation in My Tucson?

I’ve noticed a whining o r grinding noise from the engine area, especially during cold starts. A mechanic said it might be the water pump bearing. Can a failing water pump cause noise, and how can I confirm this without disassembling everything?

Yes. A failing water pump can cause a whining, grinding, o r chirping noise, especially when:

The pump bearing is worn.

The pulley is misaligned o r wobbling.

The serpentine belt slips due to poor tension o r damaged pump pulley.

You can often identify this by:

Using a mechanic’s stethoscope to listen for noise around the water pump area.

Checking for visible wobble o r movement in the pulley when the engine is idling.

Listening for changes in sound when you rev the engine.

If ignored, the water pump can seize completely, causing the belt to snap — which may also affect other engine components.
