Can Low-Quality Engine Oil Be the Reason for Oil Burning in My Tucson?

My mechanic says the Hyundai Tucson is burning oil because I’ve been using cheaper, non-synthetic oil. Could that be true? Does Tucson require fully synthetic oil only? What’s the recommended oil grade for Pakistani conditions, and can using the wrong oil cause high consumption?

Yes, using low-grade o r mineral-based engine oil in a Hyundai Tucson can accelerate oil burning and degrade engine performance, especially in hot Pakistani climates. The Tucson typically requires:

Fully synthetic oil API SN o r higher

SAE 5W-20, 5W-30, o r 10W-30, depending on climate and engine type.

Using non-recommended oil can cause:

Increased engine temperature.

Poor lubrication, leading to oil breakdown.

Premature wear of internal components, increasing consumption.

Stick to high-quality synthetic oils like Total Quartz, Shell Helix Ultra, o r Liqui Moly. Follow Hyundai’s oil grade recommendation in the owner’s manual. Regular oil change intervals every 5,000–7,000 km are essential in Pakistan due to dust and stop-start traffic.
