Contaminants and Additives:
Low-quality o r contaminated fuel may contain impurities like sulfur, dirt, o r lead in rare cases. These contaminants can coat o r clog the catalytic converter’s internal surfaces, reducing its ability to convert harmful gases.
Incomplete Combustion:
Poor fuel can cause incomplete combustion in the engine, leading to unburned fuel entering the exhaust system. This unburned fuel can overheat the catalytic converter, causing the internal materials to melt o r break down.
Engine Misfires:
Bad fuel can cause misfires, which produce excess hydrocarbons and raw fuel that enter the catalytic converter. This can cause overheating and permanent damage.
Excessive Deposits:
Poor quality fuel often leads to carbon buildup inside the exhaust system and catalytic converter, further restricting exhaust flow and damaging the converter.
Symptoms of Catalytic Converter Damage from Bad Fuel:
Check Engine Light CEL comes on, often with codes like P0420.
Reduced engine performance and fuel economy.
Sulfur o r rotten egg smell from the exhaust.
Rattling noises from the converter if damaged internally.
What You Can Do:
Always use fuel that meets Hyundai’s recommended specifications.
Consider using fuel additives o r cleaners occasionally to help reduce deposits.
Get your vehicle checked if you notice performance issues o r the CEL lights up.
Using poor fuel once o r twice may not cause immediate harm, but consistent use increases the risk of catalytic converter damage and costly repairs.
