“Could a dirty engine air filter be causing poor fuel economy o r black smoke in my Alpha?”
My fuel consumption has gone up, and sometimes I see dark/black smoke from the exhaust. Also, the engine seems less responsive than before. How can a clogged o r severely dirty air filter contribute to these problems? What are the key signs in a car like the United Alpha, and how often should the air filter ideally be changed in dusty conditions like many cities in Pakistan?

Effect on combustion: The engine needs clean air to mix with fuel. If the air filter is clogged, airflow is restricted, starving the engine of oxygen. That disrupts the air-to-fuel ratio, leading to inefficient combustion.

Symptoms you may notice:
Reduced acceleration o r lag when you press the throttle.
AUTODOC
Decreased fuel efficiency, because the engine may run “richer” more fuel to compensate.
FRAM
Black o r dark smoke from the exhaust — incomplete combustion can cause unburnt fuel o r soot.
AUTODOC
Possible check engine light, if the sensors detect an imbalance in the air-fuel mixture.
FRAM
Soot o r carbon buildup on spark plugs due to rich running.

Why this could be more common in Pakistan / dusty areas: If you drive in dusty conditions which is often the case, the air filter will clog faster, so you may need to replace it more often than a “normal” interval.
What to do:
Inspect the engine air filter: open the air filter housing and physically check for dirt, dust, o r blockage.
Replace the air filter if it’s visibly very dirty, o r if it has been a long time since the last change.
Use a good quality aftermarket o r OEM filter — something suited for dusty environments.
