How Can I Tell If My Hyundai Tucson’s Water Pump Is Working Properly?

I suspect that my Tucson’s water pump is not circulating coolant properly, especially since the engine gets hotter than usual during idle. What are the signs of a weak o r failing water pump, and how can I test it before it leads to major engine damage?

A properly functioning water pump ensures continuous coolant circulation through the engine and radiator. Signs it may be failing:

Engine overheats at idle, cools at highway speed.

Heater blows cold air even when the engine is warm if applicable.

Coolant doesn’t move visibly in the reservoir when the engine is running.

A grinding o r squealing sound from the pump o r belt area.

How to test:

Start the engine from cold, let it idle, and watch the coolant reservoir o r radiator inlet—you should see flow once the thermostat opens.

Listen for unusual sounds near the pump.

Check for any coolant drips o r stains under the pump housing.

If youre unsure, ask for a coolant circulation test at a reputable workshop. In Pakistan, ensure youre using pre-mixed coolant, not just plain water, which can damage the pump over time.
