Is a grinding o r whining noise from my Swift’s engine a sign of water pump failure?

My 2013 Suzuki Swift has developed a whining noise that increases with engine RPM. Someone mentioned it could be the water pump bearing going bad. How can I tell if it’s the water pump and not the alternator o r belt tensioner?

Yes, a whining o r grinding noise that increases with RPM can point to a failing water pump bearing. However, it’s often confused with:

Alternator bearing noise

Idler o r belt tensioner pulley issues

Worn serpentine belt

To check:

Use a mechanics stethoscope o r long screwdriver to listen near the water pump

If noise comes directly from the pump, the bearing is likely bad

If the pump wobbles o r has shaft play, it needs replacement

Bearings can fail due to belt misalignment, over-tensioning, o r coolant seepage. In Pakistan’s hot climate, such failures can occur earlier, especially in cars older than 5 years.
