Is a Loose Fuel Cap Causing My Hyundai Tucson’s Check Engine Light?

The Check Engine Light suddenly came on in my 2022 Hyundai Tucson. A friend told me it might just be a loose fuel cap. Is this true? Can a simple fuel cap issue trigger warning lights? If yes, how can I confirm and reset it without visiting a dealership?

Yes, a loose o r improperly sealed fuel cap is a well-known cause for the Check Engine Light CEL in the Hyundai Tucson. The car’s EVAP Evaporative Emissions Control system detects leaks in the fuel system, and a bad cap is often the culprit.

You can check this by:

Removing and re-tightening the fuel cap until it clicks.

Driving for 1–2 days to see if the light goes off.

Using an OBD-II scanner to read and clear the code common codes include P0440, P0455.

If the issue persists, you may need to replace the cap. Always use OEM parts to ensure proper sealing and sensor compatibility.
