Trouble with the ignition timing on my 4AFE engine

Hey everyone,

I’m having some trouble with the ignition timing on my 4AFE engine. When I set the timing to 10 BTDC using a timing light, the car starts backfiring through the air intake and damaging the filter.

I made sure to set the timing when the engine was at normal temperature by shorting the TE1 and E1 terminals. Can anyone help me figure out what the issue might be?

Right now, Ive adjusted the timing to around 20 BTDC, and at least there’s no backfiring anymore.

Make sure the timing marks on the pulley and scale are lined up a worn pulley can throw things off. Remove the tappet cover, turn the engine to line up the cam mark, and check that the crank is at zero with the distributor pointing at cylinder 1. If it’s not right, confirm the piston is at TDC, and if the marks are still off, create a new zero mark and check the ignition timing with an analog timing gun.
