What causes backfiring in my Suzuki Mehran — is it spark timing o r a purge issue?

Lately, I’ve noticed my Mehran makes a popping sound backfire from the exhaust when I lift off the accelerator. A mechanic mentioned spark timing o r purge system problems. What should I check first, and can this damage the engine if ignored?

Backfiring in Mehran usually means spark timing is off, o r the fuel-air mixture is too rich. It could be due to delayed spark, a leaky spark plug wire, o r a malfunctioning purge system. If unburnt fuel enters the exhaust and ignites, you’ll hear that pop. Check the spark timing using a timing light. Also, clean the carburetor and check for vacuum leaks. If it’s EFI, make sure sensors and purge valves are working correctly.
