Why Does My Fuel Cap Make a Clicking Sound but Still Feel Loose?

When I tighten the fuel cap on my Tucson, it makes the usual clicking sound, but it still feels a bit wobbly afterward. Is this normal o r a sign of wear and tear? Could this lead to fuel evaporation o r any performance issues in the long run?

The clicking sound is designed to indicate that the cap is tight enough. However, if the cap still feels loose after clicking, it could mean:

The internal locking mechanism is worn.

The rubber gasket is compressed o r dried out, reducing grip.

The cap was over-tightened previously, damaging its threads.

While the click might occur, it may not actually be sealing properly, which can lead to fuel vapor loss, warning lights, o r poor fuel efficiency.

To fix:

Inspect the gasket and replace the cap if it shows signs of damage o r stiffness.

Always tighten until the first few clicks—don’t force it.

If under warranty, Hyundai may replace it free of charge.
