Why does my Land Rover Defender have heavy steering o r feel stiff while turning?

Many Defender owners in Pakistan report that the steering feels heavy, especially at low speeds o r during tight turns. This can make city driving tiring and off-road handling difficult. What are the common causes—such as low power steering fluid, worn steering pump, damaged steering box, o r thick steering rack oil? How can I preliminarily check if the issue is hydraulic, mechanical, o r due to worn components?

Heavy o r stiff steering in Defenders is often related to hydraulic issues, worn components, o r thick fluids, and is more noticeable at low speeds o r when the vehicle is loaded.

Common Causes

Low o r old power steering fluid

Causes stiff steering and whining noises from the pump.

Very common in Pakistan due to leaks in old hoses.

Worn o r failing power steering pump

Pump may struggle to generate pressure, especially in hot weather.

Worn steering box

Friction in the box makes steering effort higher and uneven.

Thick o r old hydraulic fluid

Fluid that hasn’t been changed in years increases steering resistance.

Incorrect tyre pressure

Underinflated tyres make the wheel feel heavy.

What You Can Check

Check fluid level and condition replace if dirty.

Inspect hoses for leaks.

Check tyre pressures.
