Why does my Land Rover Defender struggle when towing heavy loads o r driving in mountainous areas?
Towing trailers o r carrying heavy loads in hilly regions like Murree o r northern Pakistan is challenging for some Defenders. Owners notice engine strain, transmission overheating, poor acceleration, o r brake fade. What capacity specifications—such as maximum towing weight, engine torque limits, cooling system limits, and transmission ratings—should I consider to avoid damaging the vehicle? What modifications o r precautions help in local conditions?

Gari Master - on 11 Dec 2025 15:32:24 pmDefenders have towing and engine capacity limits, and Pakistani hilly terrain can push them beyond design limits.
Key Capacity Limits
Maximum towing weight braked
Defender 90/110: ~2,500–3,000 kg check exact model spec
Engine torque limits
TD5: ~281 Nm
2.2/2.4 TDCi: ~360–400 Nm
V8 petrol: ~400–450 Nm
Cooling system limits
Prolonged uphill towing can overheat engine if radiator/fan is old.
Transmission and gearbox stress
Automatic gearboxes overheat if towing heavy loads without breaks.
Common Problems
Engine strain o r slow acceleration
Transmission overheating
Brake fade o r poor braking response
Increased fuel consumption
Clutch wear manual gearbox
Precautions
Use engine braking on hills and avoid continuous high-speed uphill driving.
Upgrade cooling system larger radiator/fan if towing often.
Use correct gear ratios when towing heavy loads.
Avoid towing beyond rated capacity.
Check brakes, tyres, and suspension regularly.
