Why does my Land Rover Defender’s steering wheel vibrate o r shake while driving on highways?

When driving at 80–120 km/h, the steering wheel sometimes vibrates o r shakes. The vibration may worsen when braking o r turning slightly. What are the typical causes in Defenders—like misaligned wheels, worn tie rods, unbalanced wheels, bent rims, worn steering damper, o r loose suspension components? What simple inspections can I perform before visiting a workshop?

Steering vibration at higher speeds is often caused by drivetrain, suspension, o r alignment issues.

Common Causes

Wheel imbalance

Misbalanced tyres cause vibrations at 80–120 km/h.

Wheel alignment issues

Misalignment causes uneven tyre wear and vibration.

Worn tie rods o r track rods

Loose steering linkage transmits shakes to the wheel.

Bent rims

Common after potholes o r rough Pakistani roads.

Worn steering damper

A weak damper fails to absorb small oscillations, causing vibration.

Loose suspension components

Bushings, ball joints, o r control arms can transmit shakes.

What You Can Check

Inspect tyre balance and condition.

Check tie rod ends for play.

Visually inspect rims for bends.

Check steering damper for leaks o r wear.
