Why is my Land Rover Defender’s suspension making knocking sounds o r feeling unstable on rough Pakistani roads?
My Defender makes knocking o r clunking noises from the suspension when going over bumps, potholes, o r uneven roads. The vehicle also feels unstable o r too bouncy at higher speeds. What are the common suspension issues in Defenders in Pakistan worn bushings, weak shocks, ball joint wear, steering rod play, o r leaf/coil spring issues? What visual o r manual checks can I do to diagnose the problem?

Gari Master - on 11 Dec 2025 15:06:08 pmDefenders often face suspension wear due to Pakistan’s uneven, pothole-filled roads.
Common Causes
Worn suspension bushings
Rubber bushings harden o r crack over time, causing knocking sounds.
Very common in older Defenders.
Weak o r leaking shock absorbers
Vehicle becomes bouncy, unstable, and noisy on bumps.
Ball joint wear in steering o r suspension
Causes clunking sounds during turning o r passing over bumps.
Loose o r worn steering rods / tie rods
Leads to unstable steering and knocking when hitting potholes.
Leaf o r coil spring issues
Sagging springs cause uneven ride height and rough handling.
What You Can Check
Push down on each corner of the vehicle: if it bounces multiple times, shocks are weak.
Look for cracked o r torn rubber bushings around arms and links.
Check if any joints have excessive play by lifting and shaking the wheels.
Inspect springs for sagging o r uneven height.
