Why is my Suzuki Mehran’s check engine light related to emissions problems?

The check engine light in my Suzuki Mehran has been on for a while now, and I suspect it’s related to emissions. What could be triggering this warning? Should I worry about expensive repairs, o r are there any simple fixes I can try before taking it to a mechanic?
