My 2014 Swift has started idling roughly and sometimes stalls when stopped at signals. A mechanic suggested the purge valve might be stuck open. How does this affect engine performance, and is it a common problem?

Yes, a stuck-open purge control valve is a common cause of rough idling and engine stalling, especially during warm starts o r at idle. The purge valve is part of the EVAP Evaporative Emission Control system, which controls fuel vapor flow from the charcoal canister to the engine.

When stuck open:

It sends excess fuel vapors into the engine intake.

This leads to a rich air-fuel mixture, causing unstable idle and occasional stalling.

This is a common issue in Pakistan due to dusty conditions, poor maintenance, o r unfiltered fuel vapors clogging the valve. If cleaning doesn’t help, replacement is usually necessary.
