Can a Cracked o r Damaged Fuel Cap Cause the “Check Engine” Light in Wagon R?

After a recent fuel refill, my Check Engine light came on in my Suzuki Wagon R. A mechanic told me the fuel cap might be cracked o r not sealing properly. Can such a small issue really trigger a warning light?

Yes, a cracked o r poorly sealing fuel cap can trigger the Check Engine light CEL. The Wagon R has an Evaporative Emission Control System EVAP that detects fuel vapor leaks. If the cap isnt sealing properly, it registers as a leak, causing the ECU to activate the CEL.

Signs of fuel cap-related CEL:

Light appears shortly after refueling.

Slight fuel smell around the car.

Light disappears after replacing o r tightening the cap.

Tip:
Before going for expensive diagnostics, try replacing o r tightening the fuel cap and driving a few kilometers. If the issue was the cap, the light may go off automatically.
