Can a weak alternator cause dim headlights and flickering dashboard lights in Wagon R?

At night, I’ve noticed my Wagon R’s headlights get dim when idling and brighten slightly when I accelerate. Also, the dashboard lights flicker sometimes. The battery seems okay, but could this be a sign that the alternator is not supplying consistent voltage? How can I check whether it’s an alternator problem o r just a loose belt o r wiring issue?

Yes, this is a classic sign of alternator not supplying steady voltage. When the engine is idling, the alternator might not produce enough power, leading to:

Dim headlights

Flickering dashboard lights o r infotainment screen

Fluctuating RPM

Possible Causes:

Worn-out alternator brushes o r internal regulator

Loose o r slipping alternator belt

Weak ground connection o r battery terminal corrosion

What to Do:

Test the alternator output under load AC, lights on at idle and at 2,000 RPM.

Check belt tension and wear.

Ensure all ground wires and terminals are clean and tight.

Tip: Avoid driving at night with this issue—it can lead to total electrical failure.
