Is AC usage the main reason for high fuel consumption in Wagon R during summers?

Now that summer has arrived, I’ve noticed my Wagon R’s fuel average has ped significantly — from 14–15 km/l to around 10 km/l. I always drive with the AC on. Is this a normal for this car, o r could there be some issue with the AC system o r engine load management? Also, how can I optimize AC use to get better fuel average without compromising comfort?

Yes, AC usage significantly increases engine load, especially in a small 1000cc car like Wagon R. Expect a 15–25% in mileage during summer. However, if the is too drastic e.g., from 17 km/l to 9–10 km/l, it may indicate:

Low refrigerant levels

Faulty compressor clutch o r high engine drag

Dirty condenser o r cooling fan issues

Tips to Reduce AC Impact:

Don’t run AC on full all the time set to recirculation mode

Park in shade o r use windshield shades

Service AC system annually

Avoid aggressive acceleration with AC on
