Is it necessary to replace the fuel filter in Wagon R regularly, o r only when theres a problem?

My Wagon R has done over 70,000 km, and I’ve never changed the fuel filter. The car runs fine, but I’m wondering if it’s necessary to replace it as preventive maintenance. Does keeping the same filter for too long lead to engine issues, poor mileage, o r fuel pump damage in the long run?
