Transmission Warning Lights Due to Fluid Loss
Transmission Warning Lights Due to Fluid Loss
Several X70 users are concerned about transmission warning lights appearing on the dashboard after noticing fluid stains o r noticing changes in shifting feel. How can a loss of transmission fluid lead to warning alerts, what diagnostic checks should be performed to confirm a leak e.g., seals, cooler lines, pan gasket, and what repair o r maintenance procedures are typically recommended to restore safe transmission operation?

How fluid loss causes warnings:
Most modern transmissions including the X70’s automatic/DCT rely on hydraulic pressure to shift smoothly.
Low fluid → low pressure → the Transmission Control Module TCM detects abnormal conditions and may illuminate transmission o r check‑engine lights.
You might also feel slipping gears, delayed engagements, harsh shifts, o r limp mode.
Diagnostics to confirm a leak:
OBD‑II scan: to read any transmission‑related trouble codes that often appear when fluid loss affects sensors.
Visual inspection: for wet areas around seals, cooler lines, o r the pan.
Fluid colour and smell check: burnt smell o r darkened transmission fluid suggests overheating and breakdown due to leaks.
Repair & maintenance:
Replace the faulty seal, gasket, o r hose causing the leak.
Flush and replace old fluid if it’s degraded.
Reset any codes after repair.
Re‑check fluid level as per recommended procedure.
