What causes alternator belt noise in Suzuki Wagon R and can it lead to alternator failure?

I’ve started hearing a high-pitched squealing noise during cold starts in my Suzuki Wagon R, especially when I turn on the AC o r headlights. A local mechanic said it’s the alternator belt slipping. Can a loose o r worn-out alternator belt damage the alternator o r affect charging performance? Should I get it tightened o r replaced, and how can I check the belt condition myself?

A squealing sound usually means the alternator or accessory belt is slipping. This can:

Prevent the alternator from spinning properly

Cause low voltage output

Lead to premature bearing wear on the alternator

Possible Causes:

Loose o r stretched belt

Worn-out belt with cracks o r glazing

Faulty belt tensioner if installed

What to Do:

Inspect the belt for cracks, shine, o r looseness

Replace if it’s older than 40,000 km o r looks worn

Ask a mechanic to properly tension the belt

Tip: Belt replacement is cheap and should not be ignored—prolonged slipping can kill the alternator.
