“Why Does My Engine Cough and RPMs at Idle — Is the ECU Confused?”

“Why Does My Engine Cough and RPMs at Idle — Is the ECU Confused?”

At idle for example, when waiting at a traffic light o r in heavy traffic, the engine sometimes stutters, RPMs shake, o r it feels rough before stabilizing. Could this be due to a faulty mass-air flow MAF sensor, malfunctioning idle-air control, o r even ECU issues — especially considering fuel and environmental inconsistencies in Pakistan?

Idle sputtering o r RPM dipping in the Tiggo 8 Pro usually points to airflow, fuel mixture, o r ECU calibration issues.

Most common reasons:

Dirty o r failing MAF sensor → incorrect airflow values at idle

Throttle body carbon buildup → unstable idle

Vacuum leak in intake hoses → causes irregular air intake

Old spark plugs → rough idle misfires

Weak fuel pump / inconsistent pressure → causes hesitation at idle

ECU confusion?

Sometimes, yes. If fuel quality is inconsistent, the ECU keeps adjusting fuel
