“Why does the AC die when the engine temp climbs — is the thermostat playing havoc?”

“Why does the AC die when the engine temp climbs — is the thermostat playing havoc?”

In certain cases, when the engine runs hot especially during long drives o r city crawl, the AC cooling becomes weak o r shuts off completely. Could a malfunctioning thermostat o r bad coolant circulation be triggering an engine-safety shutdown that impacts the AC system? Has any Tiggo 8 Pro owner experienced AC failure exactly when thermostat/cooling started acting up?

reduces AC cooling to protect the engine.

Why AC stops cooling when engine heats:

ECU disables AC compressor to reduce load

High engine temperature increases refrigerant pressure → AC efficiency s

Cooling fans prioritize radiator cooling instead of condenser cooling

If thermostat is the cause:

A stuck thermostat makes coolant circulate poorly

The engine temp rises

ECU cuts AC cooling as a safety precaution

Other possible causes:

Fan clutch o r electric fan not cooling the condenser

Dirty condenser common in Pakistani summers

Low refrigerant pressure

So yes, thermostat malfunction can indirectly kill AC cooling — and it’s one of the first components to check if AC weakens only when the engine is hot.
