Why is my Suzuki Wagon R’s engine warning light on and the car running rough? Could it be the purge control valve?

My Suzuki Wagon R’s check engine light recently came on, and I’ve noticed the engine running rough with occasional hesitation. A local mechanic mentioned it might be due to a faulty purge control valve. How common is this problem in Wagon Rs in Pakistan, and what exactly does the purge control valve do?

The check engine light CEL coming on along with rough engine performance can indeed be caused by a faulty purge control valve PCV. The purge valve controls the flow of fuel vapors from the charcoal canister to the engine intake to be burned rather than released into the atmosphere. When the valve malfunctions, it can cause:

Improper air-fuel mixture leading to rough idling o r hesitation.

Increased emissions triggering the CEL.

Sometimes hard starting o r stalling.

In Pakistan, this is a relatively common issue, especially in older Wagon Rs o r those exposed to poor fuel quality and irregular maintenance.
