Why is the check engine light on with an emission warning in my Suzuki Wagon R?

The check engine light, often accompanied by an emissions warning, can indicate problems with components like the oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, o r EGR valve. What are the most likely causes in the Wagon R, and how can they be diagnosed properly?

When the check engine light comes on alongside an emission system warning, it typically indicates a fault in one of the engines emission control components. Common reasons in the Wagon R include:

Faulty oxygen sensor O2 sensor – This sensor monitors exhaust gases. If its not working properly, the engine can run rich o r lean, triggering the warning.

Malfunctioning catalytic converter – If its clogged o r underperforming, it wont convert harmful gases effectively.

Loose o r damaged gas cap – A simple but often overlooked cause that affects the evaporative emission control system EVAP.

EGR valve issues – If the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve is stuck o r clogged, it can raise NOx emissions.

Air/fuel mixture imbalance – Often caused by a dirty air filter, leaky injectors, o r a bad MAF sensor.
