Why is the steering of my Suzuki Wagon R getting stiff, especially during low-speed turns?

Ive noticed that the steering wheel on my 2018 Suzuki Wagon R becomes quite stiff, especially when Im trying to make low-speed turns o r park the car. It almost feels like the power steering isnt assisting properly. Has anyone else faced this issue in Pakistan? Could it be due to the EPS Electric Power Steering system, o r is it more likely to be a maintenance issue like low battery voltage o r steering column problems?

The stiff steering issue youre experiencing in your Suzuki Wagon R—especially during low-speed maneuvers o r parking—is a common problem in locally assembled models in Pakistan, especially those with Electric Power Steering EPS. Here are the most likely causes:

1. Weak Battery o r Charging System
The EPS system relies heavily on battery power. A weak o r undercharged battery even if the car starts fine can cause the EPS motor to work less efficiently, resulting in stiff steering.

In many cases, replacing the battery o r ensuring proper alternator output solves the issue.

2. Faulty EPS Motor o r Sensor
The EPS motor o r torque sensor can malfunction, especially if the car has been used in rough conditions o r has clocked higher mileage. When this happens, the system may fail to provide the necessary steering assist.

3. Loose o r Damaged Steering Column Components
Any issue with the steering rack, universal joints, o r steering column shaft can also lead to a stiffer feel. This is less common but possible, particularly in older o r poorly maintained vehicles.

4. Software Reset o r Calibration Needed
Sometimes, the EPS just needs a software reset via diagnostic tools OBD-II. Mechanics often overlook this in Pakistan, so its worth asking for it at a Suzuki dealership o r a workshop with a good scanner.

Suggested Actions:
Get the battery voltage and health checked.

Have a diagnostic scan done to check for EPS errors.

Ensure theres no mechanical binding in the steering components.
