Electric Tram Test Run Announced for Lahore’s Canal Road

The Punjab Government has officially launched the much-anticipated Lahore electric tram trial, introducing a revolutionary trackless transport system along the city’s iconic Canal Road. This initiative marks the first of its kind in South Asia, setting a milestone for Punjab green transport and urban mobility innovation.

According to a recent update shared by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the electric tram Lahore has arrived and is being prepared for operational trials. Unlike traditional trams, this model runs on rubber tires, requires no tracks, and can transport up to 300 passengers. The CM described it as a modern, eco-friendly, and cost-effective solution for Lahore’s growing traffic needs.

Features and Functionality of the Electric Tram
This new Canal Road tram is officially known as the Automated Rail Rapid Transit (ART). Imported from China, the vehicle is currently under assembly at Ali Town Depot in Lahore. It comprises three connected coaches, offering convenient capacity and a quick recharge time—capable of traveling 25 to 27 kilometers with just a 10-minute charge.

Initial trials will cover a dedicated stretch along Canal Road transport between Thokar Niaz Baig and Harbanspura, with an extended proposal to include Main Boulevard Gulberg. The goal of this electric tram trial is to evaluate real-time performance in traffic without disrupting existing infrastructure—meaning no road widening or tree removal will take place, keeping the effort budget-friendly and sustainable.

Vision for Modern Urban Mobility in Punjab
The Lahore tram project is part of the broader Punjab green transport strategy under the province’s five-year urban mobility plan. This policy aims to introduce cutting-edge transit solutions inspired by successful ART models in countries like Qatar, Malaysia, and the UAE.

Each tram will offer advanced amenities such as Wi-Fi connectivity, CCTV security, and solar-powered charging stations, helping cut down on rail infrastructure costs. If successful, the tram test Punjab will pave the way for similar systems in Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and other major urban centers.

A Greener and Smarter Future Ahead
This initiative demonstrates a strong commitment from the provincial government to reduce pollution, enhance public transport, and modernize the travel experience. As part of the broader Punjab tram news, the rollout of this eco transport Lahore system could position the province as a model of sustainable development in the region.
