Proton Saga Overview
The Proton Saga is a subcompact car made by the Malaysian automaker Proton. Launched in 1985, it became a significant event in the Malaysian auto industry and has since become one of Proton's longest-running models, with over 1 million units produced in 35 years.
The first-gen Proton Sagawas created in partnership with Mitsubishi Motors and came in two versions. It quickly became popular and earned recognition for its design and performance, and was produced until 2008 and exported globally due to high demand.
The second-gen Proton Saga debuted in 2008, offered in three variants, and received a large number of bookings in the first two weeks of its release.
The third-gen Proton Saga was released in 2016, featuring improved safety features such as electronic stability control and a 20% stronger body. It received a refresh in 2019 with upgraded trim.
Proton Saga was also introduced in Pakistan in partnership with the Al-Haj Group and is available in three variants: Proton Saga Standard MT, Proton Saga Standard AT, and Proton Saga Ace.
Proton Saga 2024 Exterior
The Proton Saga 2024 boasts a sleek and eye-catching design, featuring curves and a round design language. The front of the car is highlighted by Proton's signature "infinite weave grille" and a front bumper. All variants of the car come with halogen headlamps, while the Ace version also has LED daytime running lights.
The side of the car stands out with electric side mirrors and LED turn signal lamps, a unique feature among its competitors.
The rear of the car is simple with a rear bumper, and the Ace variant comes with an added rear spoiler. All variants of the Proton Saga 2024 also come with a standard remote trunk release.
Proton Saga 2024 Interior
The Proton Saga 2024 offers a spacious and cozy interior. The steering wheel, wrapped in urethane, comes with tilt adjustment, and the Ace variant also has steering wheel switches for audio and phone control. An LCD meter combination with a multi-information display is located behind the steering wheel.
All variants of the Proton Saga 2024 feature ECO Drive Assist, power windows, keyless entry, a 12V power socket, and a height-adjustable driver's seat. The Ace variant also includes added amenities like a luggage lamp and three USB ports in the car.
The infotainment system in the Standard AT and MT versions includes a standard audio system with two speakers and Bluetooth connectivity. The Ace variant features an upgrade with a 7-inch floating touchscreen, Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, and four speakers.
Other common features in the Proton Saga 2024 include sun visors, map lamps, and a foldable bench-style rear seat.
Saga 2024 Safety
The Proton Saga 2024 boasts a range of safety and security features, including front airbags, front seat belts, an immobilizer, an anti-theft alarm, and parking sensors, to name a few. All variants of the car are equipped with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and brake assist.
The Proton Saga Ace takes safety to the next level with added features such as electronic stability control, hill hold assist, and a traction control system.
Proton Saga 2024 Engine
All versions of the Proton Saga 2024 feature a 4-cylinder, in-line 16-valve DOHC VVT 1299cc engine, producing a maximum output of 91/5750 kW/rpm and a maximum torque of 117/4000 Nm/rpm.
The Proton Saga Standard MT is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, while the other two variants, the Standard AT and Ace, feature a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Proton Saga Ride & Handling
Driving the Proton Saga 2024 is a smooth experience. The car demonstrates impressive handling at high speeds and its suspension effectively absorbs most road imperfections, such as potholes and bumps.
However, one downside of the car is its slow responsiveness, which can make handling a bit challenging. Despite this, the Proton Saga 2024 still offers a comfortable ride, making it a good value for its price.
Proton Saga Maintenance
The maintenance of the Proton Saga is hassle-free, thanks to its readily available and reasonably priced auto parts. Additionally, its 5-year warranty is a significant advantage.
Proton Saga Competitors
In Pakistan, the Proton Saga faces competition from Changan Alsvin, Honda City, and Toyota Yaris. While Honda City has been a popular option for over a decade, its popularity has declined due to a lack of new features and a higher price compared to its competitors. On the other hand, the recently introduced Toyota Yaris generated a lot of excitement, but it also comes with a higher price tag than the Proton Saga, making the latter a more attractive option for consumers.
