Kia Shehzore Is It Really the ‘Affordable Hilux Revo’?

Dewan has made a notable comeback by reintroducing the Shehzore nameplate, a model with a rich heritage in Pakistan’s automotive sector. Originally derived from the 3rd-generation Hyundai H-100 Porter, the Shehzore was highly esteemed for its durability and dependability. During Dewan's partnership with Hyundai and Kia from 1999 to 2008, the Shehzore emerged as a leading choice in the commercial pickup market, known for its solid performance and widespread popularity.

After Dewan's exit from the market in 2008, the Shehzore was briefly revived with the Daehan pickup in 2018. However, this version, while using the Shehzore name, faced quality issues and poor sales, leading to its discontinuation and Dewan's withdrawal from the automotive scene once more.

The New Shehzore: An Overview

Now, Dewan is making waves again by reintroducing the Shehzore in collaboration with Kia’s commercial vehicle division. This latest model is essentially a rebranded Kia Bongo (also known as K2700) and serves as a counterpart to the Hyundai H-100 Porter. The Shehzore is available in three distinct variants:

  • Basic Single Cab: Priced at PKR 38.59 lac
  • Extended Cab (King Cab): Available for PKR 41.79 lac
  • Double Cab (Grand Cabin): Priced at PKR 74.99 lac

All variants are equipped with a 2.7L diesel engine generating 79 hp and 164 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Pricing and Market Challenges

The pricing strategy for the new Shehzore, especially the Grand Cabin variant, has sparked considerable discussion. At PKR 74.99 lac, the double-cab Shehzore is priced significantly higher than the single-cab version, with a 95% price increase in Pakistan. In other markets, the double-cab Bongo costs only about 20% more than the single-cab variant, which highlights a stark discrepancy in pricing. Additionally, the Grand Cabin lacks features available in international models, such as a 4×4 drivetrain and a more advanced 2.5L turbocharged engine.

The steep price of the Grand Cabin has led to comparisons with the Toyota Hilux Revo in marketing efforts, a strategy that seems misplaced given the differences between the two vehicles. The absence of basic amenities like air conditioning and rear seatbelts further adds to the concerns regarding its value.

Comparing Competitors

In the competitive landscape, the Shehzore faces direct competition from the Hyundai H-100 Porter, which is priced between PKR 40.39 lac and PKR 40.79 lac. While the Shehzore’s single-cab variant is priced competitively, the King Cab model is slightly more expensive. Given that the H-100 Porter is currently a top seller in its segment, the Shehzore needs to offer strong value propositions to capture a significant market share.

Dewan's reintroduction of the Shehzore presents a promising opportunity, but the high price of the Grand Cabin variant warrants a thorough reassessment. Although the vehicle’s performance is robust, its success in the market will largely depend on its ability to deliver value relative to its price. The reception of the Standard Single Cab and King Cab variants will be crucial in determining whether the Shehzore can reclaim its former prominence.
