When it comes to pickup trucks, the Hilux is widely recognized in the mid-size segment. Other options in the market include the Ford Ranger, Mazda BT50, Nissan Navara (also known as Nissan Frontier), Isuzu D-Max, VW Amarok, Toyota Tacoma, GMC Canyon, Chevy Colorado, Honda Ridgeline, Ford Maverick, among others, though their availability varies based on the region and market.

One notable addition to the lineup is the Mitsubishi Triton, also known as L200, a Japanese model that has gained significant popularity since its introduction in 1978. Over the years, it has sold over 5.6 million units globally, with a strong presence in Oceania, Africa, and ASEAN states.

The new 6th generation Mitsubishi Triton/L200 has been unveiled, marking a significant update after almost a decade of production. It comes with a completely new platform, chassis, exterior, and interior design. The new model is larger and wider than its predecessor and will be available in Double cabin, Club cabin (two-door single cabin with storage space behind the front seats), and typical single cabin versions. The double cab is now 35mm longer, 75mm wider, and has a 45mm longer wheelbase than the Hilux double cabin, making it one of the largest in its segment.

The exterior features a rugged and boxy profile following Mitsubishi's Dynamic Shield design philosophy. Notably, the front has a larger, more perpendicular grill with horizontal slats and bigger split headlights. LED daytime running lights are integrated between the hood and headlights. The side profile boasts larger rectangular fender flares, giving the model a rugged and imposing look.

On the rear, there are new T-shaped LED taillights and an integrated spoiler, adding a sporty touch. The cargo bed now has a lower height for easier loading and unloading, and Mitsubishi offers various accessories for the bed, including a bed-liner, bed cover, and sports bar.

Moving to the interior, Mitsubishi continues with a horizontal and rectangular geometric layout, known as the Horizontal Axis concept. The interior draws inspiration from the Mitsubishi Outlander crossover and features a similar infotainment screen, an instrument cluster with a digital driver information display, and a multifunction steering wheel. The interior provides ample storage space with soft-touch materials, offering a comfortable and crossover-like experience. Mitsubishi promises best-in-class interior space and comfort for the new model. Additionally, the new model comes equipped with Mitsubishi Connect, a remote-control feature using a smartphone application, allowing control over engine operation, HVAC, and lighting.

Regarding mechanicals, the new Mitsubishi Triton offers a single 16-valve 2.4L inline turbo diesel engine, the DOHC 4N16. This engine has seen improvements over the previous 4N15, with upgrades in the intercooler, turbocharger, and fuel injector, resulting in better performance and fuel economy. Depending on the version, the engine is offered in three power bands: 148HP and 330NM of torque, 181HP and 430NM of torque, and the most powerful variant with 201HP and 470NM of torque. Buyers can choose between a manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, with the most potent engine available only with the automatic option. Both 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive options are available.

The new model features Mitsubishi's driver-selectable Super Select 4WD-II with four modes, including 2H (rear-wheel drive), 4H (full-time all-wheel drive), 4HLC (locked central differential), and 4HLLc (locked central differential with lower gear). This offers a total of 7 driving modes for various driving conditions. The new model also comes with Active Yaw Control for improved driving dynamics around corners, applying slight braking to the inner front wheels. Additionally, there is a limited-slip differential for improved traction.

The suspension system has been upgraded, retaining the double wishbone on the front axle and the rear leaf springs with better shock absorbers. The new model features electric power steering, but the rear brakes are still drum. The use of lighter but high-tensile steel in the body panels and chassis contributes to increased bending and torsional rigidity by 40% and 60%, respectively, leading to improved performance and better handling both on and off-road.

The new Mitsubishi Triton/L200 will soon enter production and first hit the market in Thailand before being made available in other ASEAN countries and Japan. Prices for the base single cabin model start at around $20.4K in Thailand, while the fully loaded top-of-the-line variant is priced at approximately $30K, based on the current exchange rate between Thailand and USD.
