Omoda 5 Takes on Electric SUVs in the UK
In early 2024, the automotive scene in the UK is gearing up for the arrival of the Omoda 5 SUV. Hailing from China, this family-sized SUV is poised to challenge established manufacturers in the market.
The Omoda 5 falls in size between the VW ID.4 and Hyundai Kona. Initially offered as an all-electric vehicle, it packs a 61 kWh battery, providing an impressive 451 km range. An anticipated hybrid option is in the works. Safety-conscious buyers will be pleased to note the Omoda 5 holds a five-star Euro NCAP rating earned the previous year.

The Noble trim level stands out with a bold front grille, although the EV variant opts for a cleaner design. Red styling accents on side mirrors and 18-inch alloy wheels inject a sporty touch. The SUV's profile is notably rakish for its segment, featuring a blacked-out C-pillar creating a distinctive 'floating roof' effect.
Inside, the Omoda 5 boasts an elegant finish, aiming to rival the best in class for build quality. While some areas have hard plastics, most touchpoints feature dense, padded materials.
The SUV houses an Android-based infotainment system with Apple CarPlay support. A voice assistant handles various vehicle functions, complemented by an eight-speaker Sony sound system for a high-quality audio experience. Adjustable ambient lighting reflecting different driving modes adds an intriguing touch.
The dashboard sports dual 10.25-inch displays, one for infotainment and the other for driver instruments. Omoda wisely retains physical buttons for heating and ventilation controls.
The rear accommodates six-footers comfortably, maintaining ample headroom despite the slightly sloping roofline and sunroof. With a 380 L boot capacity comparable to a Volkswagen ID.3, the minimal load lip ensures easy loading.
With a starting price of €27,600 in the UK, the Omoda 5 undercuts its competitors, potentially becoming its key advantage. However, Omoda faces the challenge of establishing a suitable dealer network in the UK. Matthew Upton, the UK branding manager, aims to have 50 outlets in place by March, coinciding with the Omoda 5's expected launch. This extensive network will be crucial for reaching potential customers.
The Omoda 5 marks the beginning of Omoda's venture into the UK market. Following suit is the Jaecoo 7, a larger and more premium SUV offering, equipped with a choice of petrol or plug-in-hybrid powertrains.
