Punjab Announces Big Update to Number Plate Process

A big update is rolling out in Punjab that will reshape how vehicles are registered and how number plates are managed. The Punjab government is implementing a new registration system that connects number plates directly to the vehicle owner, rather than just to the vehicle itself. This change brings major implications for Punjab vehicle registration and is designed to improve transparency and public security.

What’s New in the System?
Under the current Punjab vehicle rules, number plates are issued specifically for each vehicle. However, the upcoming vehicle plate reforms will assign Punjab number plates directly to individuals. This means that every vehicle "car or motorcycle" registered in Punjab will have its number plate linked with the owner’s CNIC, not just the chassis or registration number.

This reform is part of a broader Punjab transport update aimed at increasing accountability and clarity in vehicle ownership records.

How the New System Will Work
Here’s how the Punjab car registration process will change: when a vehicle is sold, the seller must remove the existing number plate and retain it. The new buyer has two choices under the revised Punjab vehicle registration framework:

  • Apply for a fresh number plate under their own name.
  • Use an already owned number plate, if it’s previously registered to their CNIC.

The system will also introduce categorized number plates, meaning motorcycles and cars will have numbers assigned based on their classification. Transferring a previously registered plate to a new vehicle will require a fee, ranging from PKR 500 to PKR 8,000, depending on the type and class of vehicle.

When Will It Be Implemented?
According to the Excise and Taxation Department, a formal proposal has already been submitted to the Punjab government. Once approved, the new registration system is expected to launch by the first week of next month. This swift rollout will give vehicle owners across the province time to adjust and comply with the vehicle transfer online and registration procedures.

Why This Reform Matters
Officials believe the core aim of this initiative is to strengthen vehicle security and ensure ownership traceability. By tying number plates to individuals rather than just machines, law enforcement will have an easier time identifying owners involved in traffic violations or criminal activity. This is particularly useful in handling crimes involving vehicles, as it links every plate to a verified identity.

The benefits of this system include:

  • Increased clarity during vehicle purchases and transfers.
  • Enhanced ability to track stolen or misused vehicles.
  • Stronger records for taxation and ownership validation.
  • Smoother inter-district registration in Punjab, thanks to centralized data.
  • Simplified and secure processes for private number plates.

This is a progressive leap forward for Punjab car registration and reflects a long-overdue modernization of public vehicle databases. What’s your take on these transformative changes? Share your views and experiences with the new system below.
