Unsafe EV Batteries May Cause Accidents, PAMA Warns

Pakistani auto regulators, led by PAMA, have issued strong warnings over the rising trend of unsafe battery use in EVs across the country. With the indigenous electric vehicle market expanding under the Pakistan Accelerated Vehicle Electrification (PAVE) initiative, concerns about EV battery safety have never been more urgent.

Battery Safety Risks Exposed
Recent observations indicate many EVs — especially two-wheelers — are employing lead-acid batteries, sometimes coated with graphene or other materials, in an attempt to mimic advanced forms. PAMA argues this is misleading consumers and compromising safety. Unlike lithium battery technologies, these outdated batteries tend to degrade faster, pose higher risk of fire or failure, and often carry very short warranties.

Standards and Consumer Protection
PAMA is calling for strict adherence to battery standards in Pakistan, pushing for regulatory measures that make sure only batteries proven safe and reliable qualify for subsidies under PAVE. The body emphasizes that consumer protection Pakistan depends on transparency regarding what kind of battery powers a vehicle, how it’s marketed, and the duration of warranty.

Comparing Battery Technologies
Lithium batteries, although more expensive upfront, offer better efficiency, longer lifespan, and greater safety margins. In contrast, lead-acid battery use with superficial enhancements may appear cost-friendly but end up costing consumers: in maintenance, replacements, and safety hazards. PAMA insists decision-makers distinguish clearly between “greenwashed” claims and genuine battery tech.

Policy, Subsidies, and EV Market Regulation
Under the PAVE programme, only EVs fitted with globally recognized safe battery technologies will be eligible for incentives. This is part of ongoing efforts toward EV market regulation Pakistan. PAMA also urges government bodies to audit battery supply chains, enforce labeling requirements, and increase penalties for false claims. Altogether, these steps will help build trust in EV adoption.

The Way Forward
As EV adoption accelerates, Pakistan has a chance to lead in safe, sustainable mobility. But that depends heavily on enforcing EV battery safety standards and ensuring consumers are not misled by superficial innovations. PAMA’s call to action aims to protect both buyers and the industry’s credibility — without which the green promise of EVs may lose traction.
