. Why is my Hyundai Elantra engine overheating during traffic in hot weather?

I drive a 2017 Hyundai Elantra in Karachi, and lately the engine starts to overheat when I’m stuck in traffic during peak afternoon hours. The coolant level seems fine, and there’s no visible leak. What could be causing the overheating? Is this a common issue in Pakistans climate?

Overheating in traffic is a common issue in hot cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Multan, especially during summer. Even with a full coolant level, your Elantra may overheat due to one o r more of the following:

Faulty radiator fan o r fan relay – If the fan doesn’t activate at idle o r low speeds, the engine cannot cool down.

Old o r diluted coolant – Many drivers in Pakistan top up with plain water o r low-grade coolant, which reduces cooling efficiency.

Thermostat stuck closed – Prevents coolant from flowing into the radiator.

Blocked radiator fins – Dust, bugs, and debris can block airflow, especially in urban areas with pollution and road dust.

Recommendation:
Have a mechanic scan the ECU, check the radiator fan operation, inspect the coolant mixture, and test the thermostat. Avoid relying on plain water in summer months.
