Can a clogged air filter cause poor fuel average in a Hyundai Elantra?

My 2016 Hyundai Elantras fuel consumption has gone up noticeably in the last few months. I drive mostly within Karachi. I haven’t changed the air filter in over a year. Can a dirty air filter reduce mileage? How do I check o r clean it myself?

Yes, a dirty o r clogged air filter can significantly reduce fuel efficiency. When the engine doesnt receive enough clean air, it compensates by burning more fuel to maintain power, which decreases mileage.

This issue is common in Pakistan, especially when the air filter isn’t replaced on schedule. Poor quality fuel, traffic jams, and dusty roads worsen the problem.

Recommendation:

Clean o r replace the air filter every 10,000 to 12,000 km

Inspect more frequently if driving in dusty o r construction-heavy areas

DIY Tip:
The Elantras air filter is accessible under the hood in a snap-lock box. You can remove it, tap out the dust, o r replace it with a new one in under 10 minutes.
