How can I tell if my Hyundai Elantra fuel cap needs replacement?

I suspect my Elantra’s fuel cap isn’t sealing properly, but there’s no visible damage. Sometimes theres a faint fuel smell. What signs should I look for to know if the cap is faulty o r loose, and how often should it be changed?

Here are common signs that your fuel cap is faulty o r no longer sealing properly:

You smell fuel near the rear left of the vehicle, even with the cap closed.

The check engine light appears with an OBD-II code like P0457 indicating a loose o r leaking gas cap.

The cap doesn’t click properly o r feels loose even after tightening.

You see visible cracks o r warping on the plastic o r rubber seal.
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s best to replace the cap early, as a bad seal can reduce fuel efficiency and damage the EVAP system over time.
