Yes, the oxygen O2 sensor plays a critical role in regulating the air-fuel mixture. If its malfunctioning:

The engine might run too rich o r too lean, increasing harmful emissions.

It leads to poor fuel economy and sluggish performance.

It may trigger the check engine light if connected to an OBD system.

Symptoms of a failing O2 sensor:

Sudden in mileage

Rough idling o r misfiring

Failed emission test

Strong fuel smell from exhaust

Solutions:

Get a diagnostic scan OBD2 to check sensor performance.

Replace the O2 sensor if its older than 80,000–100,000 km.
